Tight ends are fast becoming one of the most important positions for any prospective FF Champion. With the league becoming more pass happy, the TE position is seeing more and more balls thrown their way. If you can get a good one, it's like having an extra top wideout. Here are the top ten heading into this FF season.
Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers
The perennial top tight end in the game, Gates is the favorite target of the top offense of a year ago. Throw in that opposing teams can't really double up on him because of the threat of wideouts Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd and you have fantasy gold for yet another year. If Gates can stay healthy, expect a huge year from him.
Jason Witten, Dallas Cowboys
Witten did some of his best work last season with Romo on the injured list last season but don't let that scare you off as the TE and his QB has shown a great rapport so far this preseason. With young weapons on the outside and in the backfield, Romo will lean heavily on his trusted tight end in the year to come.
Dallas Clark, Indianapolis Colts
Clark is about the only Indianapolis player outside of maybe Joseph Addai who would benefit if Peyton Manning isn't ready to go at the start of the season. The why is simple, new QB's usually like to go to the tight end often because he is seen more of as a safety valve. So even without Manning, Clark will produce and when he gets his QB back, he should be even better.
Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers are a team in flux with the hiring of a new head coach with some radical changes in mind. That being said, the team can only get better as the season goes on. Expect solid number from the uber-talented Davis this season.
Jermichael Finley, Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers won the SuperBowl last year without many of it's key pieces, including Finley. Now that he's returned, the offense is that much better for it. The Pack boast a high flying offense that will create many opportunities for Finley.
Owen Daniels, Houston Texans
When you are a pass catching tight end on one of the most potent offenses in the NFL, you are going to make the top ten at your position. That's the case for Daniels who plays for the trending Texans who have the look of a team that can take the Colts for the divisions top spot.
Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta Falcons
You want safe and reliable for a tight end, go no further than Tony Gonzalez. Gonzo has been doing his thing for years, and going it well, so this year shouldn't be any different.
Kellen Winslow Jr., Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Winslow Jr. is a talented wideout for an up and coming team that is looking to make a playoff push this year. Unfortunately, potential owners may want to check out some injury updates before drafting because he left Saturday's game with a noticeable limp in his left leg.
Mercedes Lewis, Jacksonville Jaguars
Lewis is a player on the rise after coming off of a breakout 2010 season that saw him put up 700 yards and 10 touchdowns. While people still may have doubts about his starting ability in fantasy leagues, if you don't get one of the top 5 at the position, you can't go to wrong with Lewis.
Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots
It's hard taking anyone not named Brady from the New England offense but one name you can be sure of getting some points is Rob Gronkowski. Gronkowski is a talented tight end who shines in the red zone and may fast become a favorite target of Brady's. While he isn't better than a low end starter, if you need someone in a pinch, he's your guy.
