Historectomy 31 Merkle’s Red Hot Boner

Celebrate Opening Day with a story about a man, a moose, and a boner. Also baseball.

We return to the tried and true Duo of History just in time as Christian and Sam unleash countless dick jokes on one of the worst gaffes ever in sports: Fred Merkle’s Boner. Back when the Cubs won the World Series and The Giants were in New York city, one man DEFINIED the popular insult that carries to this day: “What a bonehead!”

Also in this episode: Merkle was Moneyball before there was Moneyball, math majors pay baseball statician for “services”, Christian is cursed with long, lithe dancer’s legs, the lumbago is not a dance, “I’m a medical scientist, not a historologist”, our best metaphors are comic book ones, Moose McCormick a abomination of nature and science but by god can he swing a bat, they didn’t have camera phones back in 1908 contrary to popular belief, we spend a good 3 minutes (that I cut) trying to make a Don Knotts joke, Christian and Sam regale you with their Harey Carey and Jack Buck impressions, domestic abuse is not a joke…unless you’re Don Knotts, baseball courts controversy, best to interview Ty Cobb while fishing, and all comes to a happy ending at the old ball game!
