The “Old Fashioned” is the name of a cocktail that falls into a category of cocktails called Slings or Bittered Slings. Back in the late-19th century, there were only about a few dozen cocktails, and they all consisted of spirit, bitters, sugar, and water. It is commonly said that the modern Old Fashioned came into being during the late 1800’s at the Pendennis Club in Louisville, Kentucky, then quickly made its way to the Waldorf-Astoria around 1880.
How To Make an Oaxaca Old Fashioned
While the classic Old Fashioned is made with Bourbon or Rye and sugar, our Oaxacan version replaces the sugar with agave and replaces the whiskey with a potent combination of tequila and mezcal, giving the drink a subtle smokiness and a south-of-the-border kick.
Oaxaca Old Fashioned Ingredients
- 1 ½ – 2 oz Tequila
- ½ oz of Mezcal
- 1 tsp of Angostura Bitters
- Orange Zest
Oaxaca Old Fashioned Preparation
Fill a shaker with ice. Add the Tequila, Mezcal, Agave nectar and Bitters. Give it a stir. Strain and pour into an old fashioned glass. Peel orange zest from a fresh orange. Hold a lit match to orange zest to release the oils. Rub zest on rim of glass then drop it into the cocktail. Give it another stir and enjoy.
