It’s official: the big budget Marvel Studios film adaptation of the Inhumans is no longer in the cards. But Marvel’s not about to give up on its subsitute X-Men! Today, Marvel and ABC announced a deal that will bring an Inhumans TV series to the network in 2017. However, that doesn’t mean that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s creations won’t get their shot on the big screen!

Via Deadline, the first two episodes of Inhumans will be filmed with IMAX digital cameras and released as a movie for a two week run in IMAX theaters before heading to ABC in September 2017. IMAX will also contribute to the budget of the series, which is an extremely unusual deal.

As originally envisioned in Marvel’s comic book universe, the Inhumans are a race of genetically altered humans who have the potential to gain superpowers after undergoing exposure to the terigen mists. According to the report, this will not reuse the storyline that was originally planned for the Inhumans film, but it will follow “the never-before-told epic adventure of Black Bolt and the royal family.”

The report goes out of its way to mention that this show will not be a spinoff of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., despite the fact that show regularly features Inhuman characters and it also introduced the concept to the MCU.

At some point, Marvel Studios either lost faith in the potential of an Inhumans movie or they simply weren’t interested in pursuing it. Remember, Marvel Studios is now separate from Marvel TV and Marvel’s publishing department, which allows Kevin Feige a large degree of autonomy. However, the Inhumans are still a big part of Marvel’s comic line, and it makes sense that the TV division would jump on it once it became availble. But it almost certainly means that the Vin Diesel as Black Bolt rumors will not come to pass.
