Tom Hanks Teams with The Wachowskis for ‘Cloud Atlas’

Hey, Hanks! That's Mick Jagger's cloud! Get off of it!

The Wachowski Bro… uh, siblings haven't been around much since Speed Racer sped off into box office mediocrity and only moderate cult success in 2008. Now they've got a new project, and one hell of a new star: Tom Hanks has signed on to star in Cloud Atlas, based on the book by David Mitchell. We haven't read it (because we're busy, damn it), so we'll just trust the synopsis offered by Deadline, which broke the story:

"An epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution."

Wow. Sounds pretentious. It also sounds a bit like Intolerance, D.W. Griffith's 1918 apology for making The Birth of a Nation, a film which made tons of money but also celebrated the Ku Klux Klan as American heroes. Intolerance was a revolutionary film which bounced around time to tell the story of prejudice throughout the ages. We're not sure the Wachowski's needed to apologize for Speed Racer (it wasn't that bad), but hey, good for them for trying something different. We look forward to seeing how socially relevant their new car chases will be.

The Wachowskis will team with Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) to write and direct the film, so maybe that will mellow them out a bit.

Crave Online will return with more Cloud Atlas news as it a-cumulus-ates.
