Sports Illustrated has been a staple of sports media since the dinosaurs were eating cavemen
as a premeal appetizer. OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but the magazine has been around at least as
long as dirt and is widely recognized as the premier magazine for all things sports. Now, thanks to a
new partnership with NBC, the weekly great magazine is coming to a TV near you.
The Time Inc. Sports Group that controls S.I. and the NBC Sports Group
announced on Monday that they will partner together to produce “Sports Illustrated”, a
monthly, hour-long sports magazine TV Show. It will be produced by Emmy Award-winning Red Line
Films and the programs presenting sponsor will be Lexus.
The program will stick to what works in the magazine, original reporting and commentary from the
well known and trusted SI's staff. They will also tap into past SI stories to spotlight some of their
greatest work and some of the greatest sporting events over the years.
“Sports Illustrated is an iconic brand and the gold standard in long-form journalism,” said
John Miller, President of Programming for NBC Sports. “This programming fits incredibly well with
our rich history of storytelling, and partnering with Sports Illustrated for this show adds even
more quality programming to NBC Sports growing portfolio.”
The premier episode, airing on July 24th at 9 pm, will debut three days prior to the London Games
Opening Ceremony with new episodes originating on either NBC Sports or NBC. The second episode
is scheduled for Sept. 12 at 9 pm, while the third will air on October 13 at 2:30 pm on NBC.
