Penelope Mitchell is an Australian actress probably best known for her role as Letha Godfrey on the Netflix original horror series “Hemlock Grove.”
Born in Australia, Penelope Mitchell attended Melbourne University where she studied literature and was a fan of Byron and Gothic literature. She had only begun acting a few years before landing her breakout role on “Hemlock Grove.” Previously, she appeared on the kids’ show “Toony Time,” “Rush” and the reality show “Next Stop Hollywood.”
Penelope Mitchell said before landing the “Hemlock Grove” gig, she was “ridiculously poor. I was eating like free protein shakes…from some events and almonds for a few weeks.” In a separate interview, she said, “I uprooted my life from Australia and came over to America with the idea of pursuing my acting career. I wasn’t really sure where I would end up. I threw caution to the wind. But, this script was just phenomenal. It completely blew me away, and the rest is history.”
Penelope Mitchell is also a self-confessed genre nerd. “I was raised on a staple diet of Sam Raimi and Quentin Tarantino, and a lot of Stanley Kubrick.” Regarding how the project is like being a teenager, Penelope Mitchell said, “Your emotions are so tumultuous and so unpredictable. You’re just trying to understand yourself.”
She said she was glad she took time before moving to Los Angeles and waiting until she was ready. “I felt like I was a strong enough person in my own self. This city can be really brutal and really fast paced and it’s important to have a sense of grounding and your own morality and not get swiped up in all the bullshit.”
If she weren’t an actress, she would like to be an explosive technician.
Penelope Mitchell currently lives in Los Angeles.
