What better way to celebrate another stellar New Music Friday than by making a Crave playlist with tracks from 21 Savage, Capital Cities, Cut Copy, DJ Shadow, The Bloody Beetroots and Black Asteroid. Enjoy.
You can often tell who’s on top of the hip hop charts by which rapper is on top of Amber Rose (what?). That current honor goes to trap rap star 21 Savage, who releases his highly-anticipated, Metro Boomin’ produced, full-length major label debut album, Issa Album (Epic Records) today.
Capital Cities are like the modern-day equivalent of Duran Duran without the feathered earrings (or classic catalogue). They make unapologetic, dirty sax-powered, yacht rock that makes you want to take your top off. This not-so subtly-titled EP has all the makings of a summer pool party soundtrack.
It’s been too long since we heard real Cut Copy music, but their new single finds them in classic dance-pop-rock form. “Airborne” is a made for summer jam with a resounding chorus that we hope they listen to when recording their next album “That don’t stop me.” The Aussies will perform at several U.S. festivals this fall, including Luna Lights, CRSSD and Austin City Limits.
I don’t know much about Black Asteroid, other than that he was the former music engineer for Prince and is one half of the critically acclaimed MOTOR, but I do dig this new single featuring Zola Jesus doing a scream queen meets Stevie Nicks thing. If you like what you hear, Black Asteroid’s full length, Thrust is out July 14th on Last Gang Records.
On paper, this team up looks like the audio equivalent of a mismatched buddy cop movie, but it works in a very ACDC 2.0 kind of way.
This surprise EP features the wax wizard collaborating with Nas, Danny Brown, and Academy Award-winning composer Steven Price.
