Trent Reznor Composing Theme Music for Black Ops 2

Don’t expect any overtly gung-ho, patriotic crap from the Nine Inch Nails frontman.

Earlier this year we composed an article outlining eight reasons why Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 has us excited. Well, if we had known this news, our list would probably be very different. Honestly, it probably would be this news repeated at least 15 times.

Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails fame is composing the theme music to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

The announcement comes courtesy of USA Today, who snagged a few choice quotes from Mr. Reznor, including why he’ll be avoiding a patriotic composition.

“There is a lot of reservation and angst and sense of loss and regret and anger bubbling under the surface," Reznor told USA Today regarding the underlining themes of Black Ops 2’s story. "So it didn't make sense to have a gung ho patriotic feeling kind of theme song. It has to feel weighty."

Trent Reznor has been on a tear recently, scoring the soundtracks to The Social Network, which he won an Oscar for with collaborator Atticus Ross, as well as David Fincher’s version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The theme music to Black Ops 2 represents yet another project Reznor is piling on while simultaneously finishing up the next How to Destroy Angels album and working on new Nine Inch Nails music. The dude is quite busy these days.

It’s also worth noting that Reznor is a huge fan of video games. Back in the day, he composed the scores to Quake and Doom 3 for id Software. According to Reznor, getting the chance to work on the Call of Duty is a huge step for him.

"I have always looked to that franchise as the cutting edge of what seemingly unlimited budgets and full-on not cutting any corners can do in the current day and age,” admitted Reznor.

Consider us elated to hear such a talented musician is working on such a blockbuster gaming franchise. If it isn't obvious, we’re really pumped to hear what he brings to the table.

UPDATE – here's a little taste of Reznor's theme as part of a new trailer for Black Ops 2, entitled "The Villain Trailer."
