Jennifer Garner IS Miss Marple! Also... WHAT?!

Yesterday we reported that Disney had acquired the rights to Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple series, about an elderly old spinster who solves mysteries, and we joked (well, half-joked) that we would report back when Dame Judi Dench had been signed to play the lead. To quote our own review: "I mean honestly, who else?"

Well, according to Deadline, it turns out it was Jennifer Garner. That’s who else.

Take a moment to think about this casting decision.

Now stop. On the surface this kind of choice is extremely perplexing, since the entire selling point of Miss Marple was the conceit that a dowdy old lady is investigating murders, not some young go-getter. It makes one wonder why Disney would even bother purchasing the rights to the franchise if they were going to disregard its one defining concept. Now, we like Jennifer Garner. She’s a talented, charismatic performer. But what, exactly is the point here?

On the other hand, maybe it works. We know Jennifer Garner is playing the lead. We know she’s playing ‘Miss Marple.’ But what we don’t know is whether she’ll be the only Miss Marple. Mayhap Garner is playing just the latest Miss Marple, and could perhaps seek the guidance of a previous – and actually rather accurate to the original series – elderly version of the character. An aunt, perhaps.

And probably played by Judi Dench.

At least, that’s what we hope is happening. Because otherwise this is kind of stupid. It could still be a good movie if that’s the case, but it’s unlikely to be Miss Marple

Crave Online will be back as soon as they officially cast Judi Dench. Again.
