Remember when Matt Damon said he wouldn’t return to the Bourne franchise without Paul Greengrass? Remember when Paul Greengrass said he just plain wouldn’t return to the Bourne franchise? Yeah, well… Universal appears to be fine with that. The upcoming fourth film in the franchise – rumored title: Bourne Legacy – will go on with a new lead, says Deadline. The good news: they’re not actually asking anyone to take over the character from Matt Damon. The bad news: everyone in town wants the part anyway. Here’s the list of actors being considered by writer/directory Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton):
Jake Gyllenhaal (Source Code), Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man), Josh Harnett (Black Hawk Down), Joel Edgerton (Animal Kingdom), Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), Michael Pitt (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Benjamin Walker (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter), Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Oscar Isaac (Sucker Punch), Michael Fassbender (X-Men: First Class), Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans), Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) and Taylor Kitsch (X-Men Origins: Wolverine).
Notice anything? Beside the fact that they’re all white guys, they’re not all in the same age range, meaning the lead character in Bourne Legacy will probably be tailored to the star who nabs the part. Personally we’re hoping for underdogs like Michael Pitt or Paul Dano to get their big break, letting the story and franchise power put the butts in seats and letting them just play the part straight, rather than try to amp up the star power. On the other hand, if they cast Garrett Hedlund people might think Bourne Legacy is a sequel to Tron Legacy, and that would be one hell of a crossover.
