It seems that when you say that you are done with negotiations, then you are done with them….for a little bit. At least that’s the impression coming from the New Jersey Nets as after making a public announcement that they were backing off of a deal for Carmelo Anthony last month in the wake of Anthony canceling a scheduled visit with Nets ownership, they have returned to the negotiations table for the talented all-star.
The Nets are reportedly offering Troy Murphy, Ben Uzoh, Devin Harris and four first-round picks along with Derrick Favors to Denver for Anthony, Chauncey Billups, Shelden Williams, Melvin Ely and Renaldo Balkman. That’s a boatload of picks and talented players (for the most part) for basically one guy.
Only one problem…HE DOESN’T WANT TO BE A NET!
That’s the reality of this situation, Carmelo doesn’t want to go anywhere but New York. New York is his one and done destination and no amount of bullying by the Nets or the Nuggets is going to change it. Yes, it’s more than likely that the Nuggets, and Anthony, to a degree, is using the Nets to try to get the Knicks to commit to a deal that will send everything, including the kitchen sink, to Denver for Anthony BUT (and it’s a big but for a reason), New York has no reason to make a panic deal right now.
The Knicks know how bad Anthony wants to be in New York, to team up with Stoudamire and be in the increasingly talent-laden East. They also know that they can more than likely get him without losing key players in the offseason. And if they don’t, they can go after Dwight Howard or Chris Paul in the coming years. With a week left before the trade deadline, they are in a game of chicken with Denver, only they are driving a tank while the Nuggets are sporting a Volvo.
The only potential snag to New York getting Anthony one way or another is going to come down to the ego of Anthony himself. It’s being reported that Carmelo is growing frustrated with New York’s inability to complete the trade and corresponding reports that New York is hesitant to surrender Gallinari and/or Fields for him.
And everyone knows that once you factor an athlete’s enormous sense of self worth into the mix, that anything can happen.
One thing is for certain, however, this drama will be put on the back burner in about a week at most and I, for one, can’t friggin’ wait.
