It's official! Zack Snyder's Superman reboot is titled Man of Steel and General Zod is the villain (or at least one of them). Warner Bros. has just confirmed the casting of Michael Shannon in the role, joining Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Ma and Pa Kent.
In the (admittedly ever-changing) mythology, Zod is a radical and immoral Kryptonian scientist who manages to survive his world's destruction after being banished to the Phantom Zone. Upon escaping, he and his followers finnd themselves on Earth, facing off against Kal-El (Superman), the son of Jor-El, the man who helped to condemn them in the first place.
Zod was played iconically on the big screen in Superman and Superman II by Terrence Stamp. Though Snyder has claimed that he's developing his version of Superman as though no previous films were ever made, it's going to be interesting to see what aspects, if any, of the character wind up carrying over. In the original films, Zod was joined by two other evil Kryptonians, Ursa and Non who, very soon, we may be hearing casting announcements for.
