Joystiq has it that Valve's Managing Director Gabe Newell revealed an approximate statistic regarding the sales of Portal 2 since its initial launch. He did so during his talk at Games for Change earlier today.
According to Newell, Portal 2 has sold more than 3 million copies since its launch on April 19th, 2011. Newell made no inclination as to which platform that figure lines up with, so Joystiq makes the assumption that the 3 mil stat covers all platforms the game released on. We'll fall directly in line and agree.
Portal 2 was exceptional, and we said as much during our round of coverage here on Crave. It's great to see that the sequel to an unassuming, brilliantly successful, experimental game is doing so well. Valve has never been a company that's predicated its moves entirely around sequel cash-ins and profit gains, so it's hard to say whether or not sales figures like these will encourage the publisher/developer to get another sequel moving.
But we'll assume that 3 million copies sold to-date won't hurt the chances of another entry in the Portal franchise.
Until then, we'll patiently await the upcoming DLC. Is that out yet? No!?
