There’s a rumor circulating the gaming industry water cooler, straight out of Official Xbox Magazine, that says Gearbox is looking to relaunch the Duke Nukem franchise with the next entry in the series. This reboot title will supposedly be called “Duke Begins.” We’re already wondering Gearbox is taking a page out of Chris Nolan’s Batman Begins playbook here.

Apparently, Duke Begins is actually what Gearbox was working on before they picked up the reins on Duke Nukem Forever to carry the 14-year-old torch over the finish line. Duke Nukem Forever may not have been critically acclaimed, but the game solid incredibly well. And with Gearbox now being the sole owner of the Duke IP, you can bet your ass that we’ll be seeing more Duke Nukem titles in the future.

Now the question remains: is it a good idea to go back to the beginning and let players experience the no-so-humble beginnings of the gaming industry’s crudest hero? Honestly, we’re OK with it. The ‘90s action relic version of the character has run its course. The reviews of Duke Nukem Forever speak to this, but Duke Nukem, as he stands now, doesn’t make for such a compelling character anymore. He’s a one-note song. A reboot of the Nukem franchise could address this flaw and give us a better, more rounded hero.

But as a public service announcement, you better check your excitement right now. Technically, this news is all hearsay at this moment. Official Xbox Mag is reporting that Gearbox is picking up and dusting off Duke Begins, but until we hear directly from Gearbox, we can’t accept it as truth.

So what do you guys think, would you like to see a reboot of the Duke Nukem franchise, or do you want it to continue down the path it’s been traveling for the last 20 years?
