Imagine one day meeting a woman who not only tolerated your obsession with stat-building and achievement-hunting, but who shared it? Well some lucky sons-of-bitches out there have already met that woman, and have asked her to marry them.
But when you meet a woman who knows her Cloud from her Fox McCloud, you don’t just get down on one knee in a fancy restaurant and ask her to marry you the old fashioned way – you stage an elaborate and incredibly dorky set-piece which you can then later upload onto YouTube.
Here are the top 5 of the bunch.
5. Super Mario World
One of the original nerd proposals, the husband-to-be hacks his Wii copy of Super Mario World in order to spell “Lisa… Will You Marry Me?” with gold coins. The romance is dampened somewhat by his girlfriends slightly nonplussed reaction (which is bested by their dog’s overwhelming enthusiasm towards the end of the video), but C’MON – it’s Mario!
Initially this seems like your run-of-the-mill marriage proposal, albeit one held in Comic-Con. The guy is down on one knee, the girl looks suitably surprised, she says yes and then they hug it out.
But then the camera pans to the left, revealing PATRICK STEWART is presiding over the event. He holds the couples hands, lifts them and pronounces proudly: “Engaged!” Various nerdgasms commence.
3. Blizzcon Marriage Proposal
This one’s got everything: World of Warcraft, cosplay and a touch of awkwardness. Although you might not want to admit to your parents that you proposed to your girlfriend whilst she was dressed as some sort of winged druid (apologies for my lack of knowledge concerning WoW classes, gamers), there is nothing sweeter than watching a couple of nerds, opposed by an assembled crowd of thousands, celebrating their love as if they were comfortable with that level of social interaction. D’aww.
2. Chrono Trigger
Here is the husband’s take on this sickeningly heart-warming proposal, in his own words:
“I figured I'd try and recreate many of our favorite memories — stargazing, dancing, even her favorite song lyrics (from the Princess Bride). I'm a college student who is studying Computer Science, and I wanted to do something unique that used my talents, so I did some research on Rom hacking, as she was playing through Chrono Trigger. I even put in her cat, Cleo!
“Overall, it was a resounding success. She had no idea that this wasn't part of the original. When her name appeared on screen (blurred in this video), she glanced over to me (on one knee, with the ring out), wondering, "How did they get my name in this game?" When she saw the ring, she reread the proposal, nodded yes, and said, "You are such a huge nerd! I love this!"
1. Portal 2
I think the only person in the world who hasn’t watched this video is Colonel Gaddafi, but he’s got bigger problems right now so I’ll let him off. The Portal 2 marriage proposal has taken the internetz by storm not only because of its sheer ingenuity but also because it’s awesome to imagine that GLaDOS – the actual GLaDOS – helped these two love-struck sweethearts get hitched.
Also, if you think about it, the proposal actually stands as a pretty decent metaphor for marriage in general. Initially the player (husband/bride) finds the idea puzzling, maybe even a little frustrating, but after a few minutes (hours/weeks/months/years) of trial and error, they work at it and finally get it just right. You could even say it was a triumph. You monster.
