Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice… The Sequel?

Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg considering a sequel, not a remake, to Tim Burton's spooky comedy.

When we saw that Beetlejuice was once again making headlines we assumed, since this is Hollywood after all, that it was the latest cherished childhood memory to be visited by the remake fairy. Not so: Seth Grahame-Smith, the writer of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Tim Burton's upcoming Dark Shadows adaptation, along with his KatzSmith Productions partner David Katzenberg, has just signed a two-year first look deal at Warner Bros., and one of the projects they want to do is a Beetlejuice sequel.

It's odd, but with so much damned remake news floating around, good old-fashioned sequel news seems refreshingly creative. Rather than retell the story of Beetlejuice, someone actually wants to tell a new story that doesn't pretend the first, classic film never happened. Good for them. If only this new "sequel" idea could become a trend, then maybe Hollywood would get out of this creative slump they're in and…

Oh, wait…

Anyway, Beetlejuice 2 – which we sincerely hope is still called Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, as once rumored – isn't the only project that may spring from KatzSmith Productions' new deal. Deadline also reports that they're pondering We Three Kings, based on Grahame-Smith's upcoming novel about what the "Three Wise Men" were really doing on Jesus's birthday, Bryantology, about a guy (presumably named Bryan) who accidentally becomes a cult leader after inventing his own religion to exploit an income tax loophole, Night of the Living, a stop-motion animated film about a peaceful city of monsters invaded by hordes of humans, and Fire Teddy, about a nice guy who's ordered to fire another guy (presumably named Teddy), but can't do it and accidentally ends up becoming his best friend.

In related news: high concepts still sell, folks. Writing an original screenplay is still a good idea.

CraveOnline will return with more Beetlejuice 2 news after we go HOME, HOME, HOME!!!
