Will someone please check Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak's house for hidden Leprechauns. Or maybe raid QB Matt Shaub's locker for a voodoo doll that suspiciously looks like a well known Indy quarterback. Something has got to be up with those wily Texans after seemingly overnight, they went from being the second favorite in the AFC South, even third in some opinion, to being the overwhelming choice to walk away with the division crown.
I mean, how else would you explain Peyton Manning still suffering from a neck injury that would normally heal in half the time that it has taken to get even this far? And how do you really explain the Jacksonville Jaguars inexplicably releasing their starting QB, David Garrard, mere days before the season opener?
You can't. It's inexplicable that the two people Houston feared the most, the two people who stood in the road of the Texans taking that final leap, just suddenly fell off to the curbside, maybe never to be a problem again.
OK, maybe I'm jumping the gun a bit in appointing the Texans as the AFC South champs, you do kinda have to play the games still, but just take a hard look at the other three teams in the division now and tell me who is going to stop them.
Is it going to be Indianapolis, who built their team around one man and that man isn't Kerry Collins?
Is it gonna be Jacksonville, who swaps out Luke McCown and Blaine Gabbert for David Garrard, a guy who has beat the Texans three straight tries?
Or maybe the Tennessee Titans, who went out and got Matt Hasselbeck to replace Kerry Collins and Vince Young?
I'm gonna say no to all three of these teams.
The AFC South is the Texans to lose and though Houston's coaching staff and players are all going to say the right things for the camera's, they know it as well as we do. The only one who can stop them from winning it is them themselves, and I don't see that happening.
So strap on your seatbelt and grab the popcorn, Houston fans, it's going to be a fun season to be a Texan.
