‘Top Gun’ Goes 3D in 2012

"I've got the need... the need for additional revenue at the cost of our artistic integrity!"

When you think of all the movies you'd like to see converted to 3D… Well, if you're anything like us you can't come up with anything at all, since it's the rough equivalent of colorizing black and white. But something tells us that if you're actually okay with that for some reason, Top Gun probably wouldn't be at the top of your list. It's got some cool dogfights but mostly consists of Tom Cruise trying to bang Kelly McGillis and indulging in homoerotic one-upmanship with a frequently shirtless Val Kilmer. Tony Scott's 1986 blockbuster is so in your face that putting it in your face seems redundant. That's not stopping Hollywood, however: Top Gun is being converted to 3D for a theatrical release, probably for its big 26th anniversary in 2012.

Yeah… We have a lot of problems with this.

Hollywood Reporter says that Legend 3D is currently converting Top Gun to (quasi-) three dimensions. Quoth Legend 3D CEO Rob Hummel: "As I understand it, they are planning to release it in 3D in early 2012, though I known [sic] they want to get Tony Scott’s approval before they go forward."

So… Tony Scott hasn't signed off on this yet? That's the most disconcerting news of all.

CraveOnline will return with more unnecessary 3D news after our 2D glasses come in the mail.
