So much has been speculated about Barbara Gordon's return to the Batgirl identity.  We've learned from Batgirl #1 that, yes, she was shot by the Joker and confined to a wheelchair for some time, but what we don't know yet is whether or not she was ever Oracle in the new DC Universe.  We might get that answer in Birds of Prey #4, when Batgirl crosses paths with the team that she made famous.

But writer Duane Swierczynski is promising a shocking revelation that will upset the status quo all over again and rewrite the rules.

“One of my favorite thrillers is Ira Levin’s A Kiss Before Dying, because right in the middle of the novel…well, the cliche phrase would be, ‘Levin pulls the rug right out from under you,’ but that doesn’t do his legendary plot twist justice,” said Swierczynski. “Forget the rug being pulled out from under you… when you reach that point in Kiss, it’s as if someone’s rolled up that rug and proceeded to use it to beat the living crap out of you. That’s what I’m shooting for with this first arc of Birds of Prey. I won’t tell you where it is (other than somewhere in issue #4) But If I’m doing my job, you’ll be relaxing, enjoying your comic, and then…”

Well, then.  What does this mean?  Will all Barbara's history with the Birds and her close friendships with Black Canary and Huntress be completely erased?  Or will there be some secret, dark reason why they've gone their separate ways?  How can there be a status quo to upset when it's only 4 issues in?  Or does that mean the old status quo that the New 52 already upset will be further detonated?  Let the speculation commence.

Here's an advance look at the cover art for Birds of Prey #4 by David Finch and Richard Friend, which comes out in December.
