You know the old saying “strength in numbers,” right? Well, that seems to be the crux of Microsoft’s Gears of War 3 ad campaign. Microsoft will soon start airing television commercials that feature “live” stats displaying the amount of people currently playing online with Gears of War 3.

The goal: get people to say, “Holy crap. That many people are playing this game? It must be good. Let me go buy it.”

Here’s a picture to visually demonstrate the concept:

The ad campaign kicks off on September 23rd and will run until October 3rd, spread across six different 30-second TV ads. Microsoft is not being coy about how much money they are spending to market the last game in the Gears of War trilogy. Their goal is to hit the same scale they did for Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, with television ads being the campaign's centerpiece. Meaning: a lot of cheddar will be spent.
