All throughout the sixth season of "Doctor Who," the mystery of the Doctor's (Matt Smith) demise at the hands of the Impossible Astronaut has hovered over the heads of the Doctor's companions, Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill), who kept his impending death a secret in order to try to save their friend.

Along the way, Amy and Rory suffered a tragic loss when their newborn daughter, Melody Pond was kidnapped by the malevolent Madame Kovarian (Frances Barber) and raised to become a weapon against the Doctor himself. Even the revelation that Melody grew up to become River Song (Alex Kingston) didn't lesson the blow when the Doctor finally learned about his final fate.

And in last weekend's penultimate episode, the Doctor finally decided to meet his end while Kovarian and the Silence kidnapped River and placed her within the Impossible Astronaut's suit to force her to kill the Doctor once and for all.

To promote the season finale by "Doctor Who" showrunner, Steven Moffat, the BBC has released a short prequel scene that takes place in Area 52, where two of the The Silence appear to be captives and River is sporting a slightly different look…

Potential spoilers ahead for the season finale!

The BBC has also released several pictures from the "Doctor Who" season finale which raise more questions than they answer. For example, why is the Doctor wearing a toga?

And what's with all of the eye patches?

Of course, there is a brief synopsis to go along with the trailer below.

"The Doctor makes his final journey to Lake Silencio, knowing only one thing can keep the universe safe – his own death. But has he reckoned on the love of a good woman?"

Don't miss the season finale of "Doctor Who," this Saturday on BBC America!
