Cardinals Even Series With Phillies

Philadelphia ace Cliff Lee can't hold lead.

Memo to the MLB; Cliff Lee of the Philadelphia Phillies is human.

Lee went from being Superman to being Clark Kent on Sunday as he couldn't hold a 4 run lead and allowed the St. Louis Cardinals to pull out the game 2 win and even the series. For the night, Lee gave up five runs and 12 hits, striking out nine in six-plus innings, to lose his third straight playoff start.

Not hardly the playoff monster the Phillies were expecting.

"I take full responsibility," Lee said. "Any time you give a pitcher a four-run lead in the first two innings, he's in a pretty good spot. And that was the situation I was in, and somehow squandered it away."

The wild card Cardinals, who squeaked by Atlanta to get into the postseason, is giving  Philadelphia a run for their money in the early going. They are a team that has been playing with playoff type intensity for a month now as they chased the Braves and it shows in their perseverance and stubbornness.

"This is basically what we've been doing for the last month or so," Cardinals second baseman Ryan Theriot said "We've got guys who can hit, and we've got a team that can score runs. And we've got a team that knows, when we get down, there's no reason to panic. Just keep doing what we've been doing."

With the series shifting back to ST. Louis Tuesday, the Cardinals still have a lot of work to do. They also know that despite the even series, it's still an uphill battle to beat the heavily favored Phillies. But it's a battle they are prepared to take and it's one they feel they can win, and really, why shouldn't they, after doing what they have done in the past month.

That's the beauty of sports and why they play the games.
