Game three when the series is 1-1 is the most crucial game in any baseball playoff series. The team that wins that game goes on to win the series over 70% of the time. For the series going on between two NL Central foes, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers, that means the Cardinals 4-3 win on Wednesday nigh gives them the edge.

Behind solid pitching from Chris Carpenter and a man size performance from their relievers, the St. Louis Cardinals hold a 2-1 edge in the NLCS. Carpenter, while solid, wasn't the shining star he was against Philadelphia in the deciding game 5, and only managed to stay in the game for 5 inning, but the 1 run lead he left his relievers proved just enough as they kept the Brewers scoreless the rest of the way.

"You never know how it's going to work out," Carpenter said. "That's what's so fun about this game and that's what's so fun about pitching. Our guys did a fabulous job."

The loss for the Brewers should come as no surprise as they are currently riding an eight game road losing streak in the postseason, one that extends all the way back to 1982 and game 1 of the '82 World Series. This streak is the longest of its kind in major league postseason and it's one the Brewers are determined to break.

"I think regardless of whether we're winning or losing the series, we recognize what's at stake," Brewers star Ryan Braun said. "We're going to prepare ourselves just like we've been doing and expect to win tomorrow and hopefully get off to a good start."

While the Brewers are coping with the sourness of losing on the road, the Cardinals are just having a good time and enjoying every second of these playoffs after narrowly edging out the Atlanta Braves on the final night of the regular season to take the Wild Card spot.

"I think our ballclub, no matter leading or behind, it doesn't really matter to be honest with you," Carpenter said. "We have battled for the last two months or however long it's been.

"We have nothing to lose."

St. Louis looks to take a 3-1 edge in the best of 7 tonight when the two teams face off at 8:05 pm EST on TBS for game 4.
