Canadians love to eat… period. Our culinary landscape is a unique mix of many cultures and flavours. But some of the best things to nosh on were born right here on home turf. Fried dough smothered in cinnamon and sugar or fries smothered in gravy and curds, these are the top 10 Canadian-only foods.

 

Beaver Tail

These unique whole wheat pastries are stretched into the shape of a beaver tail and fried, then smothered with delectable heart-clogging butter and a choice of toppings like cinnamon sugar. It's the perfect way to warm up on a cold Canadian day.

 

Timbit

Stuffed with jelly or rolled in sugar, any Timmy's fan (Tim Horton's) knows that an early morning hockey practice isn't complete without a piping hot double double in one hand and a little cardboard box filled to the brim with Timbits in the other.

 

Poutine

Invented in Quebec but loved by the entire country, poutine's classic version of fries, gravy, and cheese curds has morphed into dishes made with unique combos of sauces, meats, veggies, and even seafood.

 

Nanaimo Bars

Born in British Columbia, the Nanaimo Bar is a lazy man's dessert – it requires no baking and is made of three delectable layers: a wafer or cookie crust, custard or vanilla butter icing, and finished off with a layer of melted chocolate that hardens.

 

Nougabricot

Mostly found in Quebec, this jam or preserve is made out of apricots, pistachios, and almonds. It's been a popular condiment for decades.

You can't get much more Canuck than a soda that tastes like a pine tree. Just like Captain Cook used to drink, spruce beer is a non-alcoholic fizzy beverage that is flavoured with the needles of spruce trees.

 

Tourtiere

No holiday or Sunday evening dinner in Quebec is complete without a homemade tourtiere on the table. Think of it as man's pie: ground beef, veal, and pork are seasoned and piled high into a pie crust and then baked. The perfect side dish: a whole lotta ketchup.

A classic Canadiana food, what could be better than butter in a tart? Butter tarts date back to the late 19th century in this country and its offshoots include sugar pie and shoofly pie.

 

All-dressed chips

You can get a pizza all-dressed (cheese, pepperoni, green peppers, and mushrooms), your hot dog all-dressed (mustard, onion, and coleslaw), and you can get your chips all-dressed. It's supposed to be a melange of many different potato chip flavours but it's mostly a savoury smoky-flavoured chip.

Everyone knows Canadians have a love affair with back bacon, and we know why: they're jealous. This cut of pork loin is brined, cured, boiled, or smoked and is a popular side dish in the morning or any time of day.
