For a limited time, current World of Warcraft subscribers can earn a free digital download of Diablo 3 when it releases next year. The newly created WoW Annual Pass locks you into a year’s worth of playing time for the dominating MMORPG. Your reward for signing up and completing the contract doesn’t just end with a free game copy.
Along with your game, you’ll receive a new mount, Tyrael’s Charger, and guaranteed access to the beta test for WoW’s upcoming expansion, Mists of Pandaria. The new flying mount will be introduced into the game when the next patch 4.3 is released. This way, you can hunt down Deathwing on a stylish new ride.
As I said before, this promotion is only applicable to players who currently have the game, so don’t rush out and buy World of Warcraft, sign up for a year, and expect all the associated goodies. According to the FAQ on Blizzard’s official site, if you have the current version of the game with all the expansions, but are currently inactive, you can reactivate your account and sign up for the Annual Pass. If you’ve already purchased game time, it will be applied towards your 12 month commitment.
The Diablo 3 Collector’s Edition was also announced at BlizzCon this year. So what happens if you sign up for the Annual Pass and then purchase the collector’s edition? If you chose to do so, once your Collector’s Edition key is applied to your Battle.net account, you’ll receive the next four months of World of Warcraft game time for free.
If you sign up for the Annual Pass, you can still pay on a monthly basis or use game time cards. The four free months gained from purchasing the Diablo 3 Collector’s Edition count towards your 12-month agreement as well.
Overall, this is a great deal for anyone who knows they will be playing WoW until the next expansion and want to play the next Diablo. The in-game mount and guaranteed access to the Mists of Pandaria beta testing are just the icing on the cake.
I don’t personally like the idea of being locked into a year long contract with a subscription based game. If I look back at my time playing World of Warcraft, I know there were stretches that I played consistently for a year straight, and therefore could have benefited from the discount of purchasing multi-month chunks of game time. However, life happens. At least twice I’ve had changes in my work schedule, or moved, or made changes to my financial priorities and gave up on the game unexpectedly.
Without a doubt, I will purchase Diablo 3 when it is released. And maybe, just maybe WoW’s next expansion will deserve a month of my time to check it out. But for now, I’ll just have to wait.
Neither the official release dates of Diablo 3, World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, nor the price point for Diablo 3’s Collector’s Edition have been announced yet.
