Michael Bay Returning for ‘Transformers 4’ After All?

Sources say Mr. Explodey Pants will come back for a fourth, geek-friendly installment of the mega popular franchise.

It's hard to imagine Transformers without Michael Bay… which, really, is a shame. Well I still kinda liked Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which I'm a little sick of defending if I'm being honest, there's no denying that Bay's enormously successful franchise is one weird mamma jamma. Giant robots so detailed that they're hard to look at sharing screen time with one of the more cloying corners of the Coen Bros. quirkiverse, navigating impossibly plothole-laden storylines and frustratingly chaotic action sequences while Shia goes steadily insane on camera? It's distinctive, but one almost wonders what a less frenetic filmmaker could do with the same material. Imagine Fast Five director Justin Lin, for example, giving Transformers a whirl. We might even be able to figure out what's going on. Funny that such a simple goal is now an impossibility, isn't it?

Because, yes, Michael Bay is returning for Transformers 4, and by extension, quite probably Transformers 5, at least if Paramount has anything to say about it since they've expressed their desire to shoot them both at the same time. And with Jason Statham, no less, unless that's fallen through. Vulture reports that Bay is now leaning towards returning to the Transformers universe for an installment that, in the site's own words, "will delve deeper into 'Transformers' canon to mine older characters and lore."

"Older characters and lore?" I have one word for you, Mr. Bay, and that word is GRIMLOCK!!!

CraveOnline will be back with more Transformers 4 news as soon as they give it a difficult subtitle like "Paranoia Android" or "Lead Zeppelin IV" or something.
