At the beginning of Steven Moffat's tenure as the showrunner on "Doctor Who," a young woman named Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) ran away with the Doctor (Matt Smith) on the eve of her wedding to Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill). Eventually, Rory joined Amy on the TARDIS and they later married before sharing a number of adventures alongside the last of the Time Lords.

However, the Ponds' journey will come to an end during the seventh season of "Doctor Who."

Following a public screening of this year's "Doctor Who" Christmas special, "The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe," Moffat told the crowd (via BBC News) that "Amy and Rory will be rejoining us next [season] and joining the Doctor back on the TARDIS. But the final days of the Ponds are coming. And during the next [season] — I’m not telling you when and certainly not telling you how —but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end."

Moffat added "There are only so many more adventures with the lovely Amy and the lovely Rory. So that story, next [season], during the [season] will be over. And then the Doctor is going to meet a new friend — and I’m not going to tell you anything about he, she or it! Who knows? It is 'Doctor Who.' There’s a universe of people to choose from."

"We’ve had the most incredible journey," noted Smith. "We took over the show and we really had to hold hands and help each other through it in many ways. So it’s very disappointing, but one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration and that’s what galvanises it and moves it forward. It’s about looking forward, always."

The seventh season of "Doctor Who" is expected to debut in the fall of 2012. The new "Doctor Who" Christmas special will air on December 25 on BBC America.
