If you're on the Zeb Wells train and you relished reading Carnage USA and watching Hawkeye be a dick and trash all the traditional catchphrases of Aunt Petunia's Favorite Nephew Benjamin J. Grimm AKA The Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Thing, chances are you're not reading Fantastic Four #601, the restart of Marvel's first superhero series. That's for the best, because this issue features the reunion of the original four, and it's all about the classics.
You may recall from Fantastic Four #600 that Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, returned from the presumed dead two years older and with Annihilus on a leash, sporting the Cosmic Control Rod and control of the Negative Zone legions. His return to Earth finds him smack-dab in the midst of a massive Kree invasion, as the revitalized Supreme Intelligence is out to exterminate the world and all traces of the Inhumans in the process, much to the chagrin of Ronan and his Inhuman bride Crystal. Johnny makes his presence felt in the most classic way possible – that big flaming 4 in the sky. Which inspires the borderline-suicidal Ben to find it in his heart to once again tell the four powerhouse Kree Sentries who were about to murder him that it is, indeed, clobberin' time.
Then, Johnny conjures up a way to beat up the Kree fleet by summoning the Annihilation Wave, which he now controls. That's a hell of a way to make a comeback.
WIth the separation of the two FF titles, so far it seems that Jonathan Hickman is keeping the hard sci-fi stuff with the Future Foundation, whereas Fantastic Four is going to be more about traditional superhero adventure tales. We'll see how long that lasts, or how much the two titles (both written by Hickman) will overlap once this settles out, but for now, it's a nice, clean set-up.
Steve Epting's artwork is solid as always, too, as well as his inking team working to make things moody when they need to be, bright when they should be and touching when Ben Grimm gets his groove back. If you're a fan of the classics, you can't go wrong with hopping onto Fantastic Four #601. If you think you're too cool for that, enjoy your gooey murderfaced symbiote. We'll be over here havin' fun.
