Game Informer has gone live with their February 2012 cover, revealing a second XCOM title currently in development at Firaxis Games. XCOM: Enemy Unknown returns the franchise to its strategy-based roots, putting players in command of a global anti-alien defense force.

2K Games went under fire when they announced a first-person shooter "revision" of XCOM, which, mind you, is still in development at 2K Marin and planned for release in 2013. However, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is being development with hardcore XCOM fans in mind, hence its focus on tactical, turn-based gameplay. The game will be launching to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

"It’s been a dream of ours to recreate X-COM with our unique creative vision. We’re huge fans of the original game and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-envision a game that is as beloved as X-COM," said Steve Martin, president of Firaxis Games. "We were careful to keep XCOM: Enemy Unknown true to the elements that made X-COM such a revered game while delivering an entirely new story and gameplay experience for both die-hard X-COM fans and newcomers to the franchise."

Game Informer will be running month-long exclusive coverage of XCOM: Unknown Enemy on their website. If you’re interested in the game, be sure to check it out. You can also pick up the Feburary 2012 issue of the magazine for more comprehensive coverage of the game.
