When "Strike Back" returns for its second season on Cinemax (and third season overall), there may be a new woman in charge.
Deadline is reporting that Rhona Mitra is in final negotiations to join the cast of "Strike Back" as Captain Rachel Dalton, the new leader of Section 20. Dalton is described as "beautiful, cunning and ultimately ruthless."
Although Mitra's first major break was as a Lara Croft model for the "Tomb Raider" video game series, Mitra has extensive experience on television, including stints on "Party of Five," "The Practice," "Boston Law," "Nip/Tuck," "The Gates" and "Gideon's Crossing." Mitra has also had featured roles in films like "Doomsday" (pictured above), "Underworld: Rise of The Lycans," "The Number 23" and "Shooter."
"Strike Back" is based on Chris Ryan's novel of the same name, which debuted on the British network Sky1 in 2010 with Andrew Lincoln and Richard Armitage in the starring roles. When "Strike Back" returned as a co-production with Cinemax in 2011, Sullivan Stapleton and Philip Winchester were cast as the new leads, Damien Scott and Michael Stonebridge, respectively.
Within the context of the show, Mitra's character will replace Amanda Mealing’s Colonel Eleanor Grant; who was killed off in the season finale. As before, Section 20 is a secretive British paramilitary force that pursues international terrorists across the globe. The new season is expected to begin filming in South Africa early this year.
"Strike Back" will likely return to Cinemax with ten new episodes during the summer of 2012.
