You may have heard tell that Cartoon Network's gearing up a DC Nation animation block featuring various half-hour animated shows alongside a lot of shorts and such. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, as it looks like Marvel's doing the same thing over at Disney XD, the first channel to feature an emoticon in its name.
Fans have been waiting with fevered anticipation for Season 2 of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the break-out animated hit that finally gives Marvel it's own series comparable to Justice League Unlimited. Having seen the 2nd season premiere back at Comic-Con, my anticipation is even more fevered than most. So now we finally know when we'll be getting new episodes – Sunday, April 1, 2012.
There will also be Marvel-related short-form series and live-action interstitials, but this new block will also feature the debut of the new animated series Ultimate Spider-Man, which is bound to cause some confusion in the comic market out there, now that Peter Parker is dead and some bloke named Miles Morales is sporting the webs in the comic with the same name. In the show, though, Peter's definitely on hand as Nick Fury's teenage S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and it's got a very cheeky, chibi-savvy look to it that's sure to make kids happy, and it's also not afraid to break the fourth wall. Plus, J.K. Simmons as the voice of J. Jonah Jameson! That alone should be enough to sell you. If not, check out the creative team.
USM's creative team includes Joe Quesada (Marvel's CCO), Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series), and Man of Action Studios (creators of Ben 10 and Generator Rex), comprised of lauded creators Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau and Steven T. Seagle; and Brian Michael Bendis, the guy who's written the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series since its inception. The voice cast also includes Drake Bell as Peter, Stan Lee as Stan The Janitor, Clark Gregg reprising his role of Agent Coulson from the live-action Avengers movies, Chi McBride as Nick Fury and Steven Weber as Norman Osborn.
"Marvel Universe block is an incredible animated ride filled with fantastic action and adventure," said Jeph Loeb, head of Marvel Television. "The spectacular team of writers and animators capture stories with all the dynamic fun you can imagine. Disney XD is the perfect place for families and Marvel fans of all ages to come together every Sunday."
