Well, it's not Lex Luthor (maybe they're saving him for the sequel, like The Joker in The Dark Knight), but Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel just added a fan-favorite super scientist to the mix. In a late addition to the film's cast, West Wing star Richard Schiff has been cast as Dr. Emil Hamilton in the DC superhero movie, currently scheduled to be released on June 14, 2013.
Variety reported on the story, and while they didn't go into details regarding his character (most of the production is being kept tightly under wraps), they did specifically say that Schiff is playing Dr. Hamilton. The odds of putting a character named "Doctor Hamliton" in a Superman movie by accident would be a lot like putting a character named "Mr. Zolomon" in a Flash movie by sheer coincidence. If he's not playing the established supporting character, somebody on the production screwed up. The extent of Schiff's role may be minimal, but at least he'll be in place for future sequels.
For those who don't know – Really? And you're reading CraveOnline? – Dr. Emil Hamilton for many years occupied a key supporting role in the Superman comics as the hero's scientist "Go To" guy, developing key technologies Supes used to defeat his enemies. In both the comics and the Justice League Unlimited animated series, Hamilton eventually changed his loyalties, deciding that Superman was a threat to mankind. In the comics, he took on the supervillain identity Ruin, and in the TV series he cloned Supergirl with the goal of raising a more reliable defendor of the human race than Superman.
