Back in October, "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" screenwriter David Goyer sold "Da Vinci's Demons" to STARZ while describing it as a historical fantasy/adventure series inspired by the life of Leonardo da Vinci; who was one of the leading minds of the Renaissance movement. And now three months later, Goyer has announced his choice for the title role.
Deadline is reporting that British actor Tom Riley will portray Leonardo Da Vinci in "Da Vinci's Demons," as the series explores a fictional take on da Vinci's life while the famed artist and inventor lived in Florence during the Renaissance.
“Given that da Vinci was the model for the ‘Renaissance Man,’ these were incredibly large shoes to fill,” related Goyer in a statement to Deadline. “Leonardo had to be smart, witty, and incredibly confident – without coming across as arrogant. He also had to be tormented, because, as a true visionary and polymath, he was ostracized for his ideas as much as he was celebrated. Tom came in and was able to effortlessly combine all of those elements. As soon as he finished his audition, we knew we’d found our man.”
Prior to this project, Riley was best known for playing Dr. Laurence Shepherd on the ITV series "Monroe," in addition to roles in "Return to House on Haunted," "I Want Candy," "Bouquet of Barbed Wire," "Freezing" and "Happily Ever Afters." Riley is also an accomplished stage performer on Broadway and London's Royal Court Theatre, with turns in "Arcadia" and "My City" among others.
"Da Vinci's Demons" will begin production early this year before running for eight episodes in 2013.
