Everyone’s Coming Back for ‘X-Men: First Class 2’

Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and director Matthew Vaughn are all officially on board for the superhero sequel.

Before we begin, let's all take a moment to appreciate what X-Men: First Class has done for us. Besides getting Fox's lucrative superhero franchise back on track after the financially successful but abysmal X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, it finally gave Layer Cake and Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn a big hit to his credit (yes, we know you loved Kick-Ass, but no, it didn't make money) and jumpstarted the careers of Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, who have each moved on to bigger Hollywood productions in the forms of Prometheus and Hunger Games, respectively. It also proved that somebody other than Marvel Studios or Christopher Nolan knows how to do a superhero movie right these days. So yes, we're happy that a sequel has just been officially announced, particularly with the same cast and crew on board.

Hollywood Reporter revealed today that Vaughn, producer Bryan Singer (who directed the first two, actually good X-Men movies) and the entire cast (probably sans all the characters who died last time) is returning for what we can only assume is tentatively being called X-Men: First Class 2, since X-Men: Second Class sounds like an insult. We'd kind of be okay if they want to bring someone else in to play Emma Frost, but we'll let that slide for now. The only folks who apparently aren't returning this time are, unfortunately, screenwriters Ashley Miller and Zack Staentz, who have been replaced by Simon Kinberg. Kinberg is something of a big name in Hollywood, but he's mostly responsible for such decent-but-forgetable screenplays as Jumper and Sherlock Holmes and, worst of all, X-Men: The Last Stand. Luckily, the script isn't a terribly important part of the production process and…

Aw, crap.

No word on potential plotlines or even a release date yet, but we'll keep you posted.

CraveOnline will be back with more X-Men: First Class news as we keep our fingers crossed for Genosha this time…
