Betting agencies across the nation are backing Hawthorn to win the 2012 premiership.

The Hawks suffered a three-point loss at the hands of Collingwood in last year’s preliminary finals, but are set to continue on from their 2011 run and have a huge season.

Featuring star players such as Buddy Franklin, Sam Mitchell, Cyril Rioli and Luke Hodge, as well as a healthy Jarryd Roughead, the Hawks appear to be the team to beat at this early stage.

A factor that may not have been given much consideration is the Hawks schedule, a relatively tough one. They will play four 2011 top-8 teams twice and only play one bottom eight side multiple times.

The Hawks have had a couple of down years since winning the 2008 flag but have a star studded nucleus led by young guns Franklin and Rioli. Franklin was awarded an All-Australian nomination for his consistent goal kicking and thrilling play in 2011 and along with speedster Rioli, the duo may be the league’s most exciting tandem.

In other AFL news, Carlton’s Heath Scotland is under police investigation regarding his involvement in a ski area bar brawl.

The veteran Blues player claims he was only breaking up a fight that involved his brother, but the assault victim who suffered a bruised head and jaw, and was knocked unconscious, says otherwise.

Witnesses stated that the 31-year-old, 223 gamer, was directly involved.

Scotland had a fantastic 2011 season, averaging 25.7 disposals per game (third best number of career), despite his age and is a pivotal member of the Blues defense.

As of yet no charges have been laid.
