Remember Insidious? It was kind of a big deal last April, making f*ck tons of money despite middling reviews, and our own really negative one. So we all expected a sequel to be announced right away, but nothing doing. Producer Joseph Blum – who's also behind the new Joe Johnston movie Not Safe for Work – said back in May that they were waiting for screenwriter Leigh Whannell to come up with a good story first. Would have been nice to have one the first time, but okay.
Well, it didn't take long. Deadline reports that Leigh Whannell has come up with a continuation of the first film after all, and that they plan to get the old gang back together, including original Insidious director James Wan, who's been working with Whannell since the original 2003 short film Saw, that inspired the trend-setting feature film one year later. For his part, Whannell seems genuinely excited about the sequel, saying, "Both of us feel that we can mine more terror from the world we created and know that if we assemble every member of the original team, we will have an amazing continuation of the story for fans of the first film."
As for the rest of us? Yeah, we'll give you a chance to win us over. Insidious wasn't an awful movie, it was just tonally inconsistent, fairly predictable, and uncomfortably reminiscent of Poltergeist. It can be saved. Get to work, Leigh. We're all rooting for you.
CraveOnline will be back with Insidious 2 news after we stock up on gas masks.
