As if the West Edmonton Mall weren't big enough or jam-packed with enough brands, one more will be added to the mix: J. Crew.
It was announced yesterday that the huge American chain will set up shop in Alberta this spring. J. Crew also plans on opening stores in Toronto (at the Eaton Centre) as well as in Vancouver (at 1088 Robson Street). The rumour of the American brand making its way up north has been circling for weeks, but this was the first time J. Crew actually confirmed the news.
Edmonton will get a 5,657-square-foot store on level two of the mall’s Phase 3 between Banana Republic and H & M stores. It’s expected to open in May.
"Since introducing the brand in Canada last year, the response to J. Crew has been absolutely electric,” said Jenna Lyons, the company’s president and creative director, in a release, as reported by the Calgary Herald. “We’re excited to be opening combined men’s and women’s stores and are working to curate our high quality fashion collections for each market.”
“Edmonton continues to be one of the best-performing retail markets for anybody coming into the marketplace just like Victoria’s Secret and Crate & Barrel,” said Paul McElhone, executive director of the University of Alberta School of Retailing, in the same article. “I think we’re a natural destination for a lot of American entrants into the country. We have disposable income and consumer confidence, and when you compare construction costs and wages, we’re still less than the States.”
J. Crew isn't the only new store to hit West Edmonton Mall – Dr. Martens and Camper are also slated to join the shopping centre in the coming months.
