It's official: the Robocop remake is on its way. Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) will direct The Killing's Joel Kinnaman in the title role as a cop who becomes property of a corporation after his body is transformed into the ultimate cyborg, and according to Coming Soon it's coming to theaters on August 9. 2013.

You know, it's kind of amazing how seriously we're able to take a movie like Robocop. For one thing, it's called "Robocop." Can you imagine if someone tried to pitch a movie today called "Robopresident" or "Robolawyer" and tried to play it straight? They'd be laughed out of the room. It's a testament to Paul Verhoeven and the original 1987's film's cast and crew that they were able to take such an oddball premise and craft a meaningful, original, dramatically engaging and hilarious sci-fi parable that still resonates to this day. And that only makes it more daunting that the remake, despite the strong director and star, has that heavy legacy to deal with.

As always, release dates (and entire productions) are subject to change at a moment's notice, and August 2013 is still a long ways away. But if they're prepping a major special effects-laden blockbuster for a year-and-a-half from now, we can expect more casting news in the very near future.
