On last night's second season finale of "The Walking Dead," Andrea (Laurie Holden) was saved from a walker by a mysterious hooded stranger, whom fans of the original comic recognized as Michonne. In "The Walking Dead" comics, Michonne is one of the most pivotal characters of the story and she is very good with a Katana blade, as viewers will see next season.

"The Walking Dead" creator Robert Kirkman made it official last night during a taping of "Talking Dead." According to Kirkman, actress Danai Gurira has landed the fan favorite role, starting in the third season Presumably, Michonne's face was obscured because the role had not yet been cast at the time that the finale was filmed.

Gurira has previously appeared in "Treme," "Law & Order" and "Life on Mars" in addition to more prominent parts in "The Visitor" and "Ghost Town."

Earlier this month, Kirkman also announced that the origin of Michonne will finally be revealed in a six page "Walking Dead" story that will run in this month's issue of Playboy. Kirkman will be joined by regular "Walking Dead" artist Charlie Adlard for the origin, which has never been seen before now. However, Michonne has previously hinted at the story behind her two walker companions, whom she keeps chained to her.

"The Walking Dead" season 3 will debut on AMC in Fall 2012.
