Max Landis Hints at Chronicle’s Biggest Mystery

The screenwriter of Chronicle and Chronicle 2 debunks a popular theory about the origins of the heroes' powers.

Some SPOILERS lie ahead, folks.

One of the excellent things about Chronicle, this year's hit "found footage" superhero movie (which completely invalidated any need for that American Akira remake), was that it never just handed you the answers to the film's mysteries. Director Josh Trank and screenwriter Max Landis managed to get through the entire film without ever revealing how their protagonists got their powers in the first place, and without us ever feeling that absence, beyond the fact that they encountered a mysterious object in a cave. The popular theory, in many circles, was that the object was alien in origin, owing partly to the fact that it was swiftly covered up in a conspiratorial fashion. And now that theory seems to have been debunked by Max Landis himself.

The screenwriter, recently announced to be writing Chronicle 2, snuck in a hint on his Twitter account April 9, stating the following:

"I figure Chronicle's been out for a while. Been a crazy last couple minutes on twitter. So I'll sneak this in: #inthecave #notanalien"

Along with the following tweet:

"And yes of course I know what it actually was, this isn't Twin Peaks. #inthecave #notanalien"

Naturally, some followers of Max Landis – the man also responsible for that hilarious and pretty much spot-on The Death and Return of Superman video earlier this year – pressed him for more information, to which he responded:

"And that's all I have to say about that."

It's hard to imagine that a sequel to Chronicle won't get into the mythology of the series at some point, so hopefully we'll know the answers for sure at some point in the near-ish future. Unless he's just yanking our chains, of course. In fact, he's got an easy out. He only said it's "not an alien," but that doesn't necessarily mean aliens are involved somehow, does it?

CraveOnline will be back with more Chronicle 2 news after we put the spider back together.
