At some point yesterday the internet began to swell with rumor and gossip about Star Trek 2. We waited patiently for confirmation so as not to waste your time, but now Trek Movie claims they have been confirmed: Benedict Cumberbatch from BCC's "Sherlock" will be playing Khan Noonien Singh in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2. It's not a shock. If anything, it's a relief. Ricardo Montalban's iconic sci-fi villain remains one of the most memorable villains in the history of the Star Trek universe, and insures that Abrams' follow up is starting out on sturdy ground. We've got more news in a paragraph or two, but let's focus on that for a moment.
If you're not steadfastly against the Star Trek retcon in the first place – and be honest, some of you still are – then Trek Movie's news is exciting beyond the obvious "classic villain" angle. The site seems to have confirmed that Star Trek 2 will not simply be rehashing "Space Seed," the episode of the original series that first introduced Khan to the world. Which makes a lot of sense. With Spock Prime alive and well and full of useful information about the Star Trek universe that our heroes don't, it makes sense that the dastardly, bastardly Khan would be a priority for him. After all, Khan f*cking killed the guy once. Maybe he sought out Khan's ship. He might not be able to accurately predict the future any more, but if the past of the Star Trek universe is the same, Spock should know exactly where Khan is.
Which would raise a number of other questions, like whether Spock will be able to adequately prepare the Federation for the Borg, or the Dominion, or Q, or the events that will eventually end the war with the Klingons.
Which brings us to the other news from Trek Movie's report: both Leonard Nimoy's Spock and the Klingons are back in Star Trek 2. Maybe we'll get answers to those questions after all.
We await news from J.J. Abrams' camp either confirming, denying or being suspiciously vague about these rumors, and will update you accordingly.
CraveOnline will be back with more Star Trek 2 news after from Hell's heart we stabbeth thee.
