300: Battle of Artemesia is gearing up to start shooting in July. That means Rodrigo Santoro is already back at the gym getting back into abtastic shape. We caught up with him after a press conference for the less badass movie What to Expect When You’re Expecting, in which he plays J-Lo’s husband. He said he’s excited to revisit Xerxes.

“I’ve never really twice played the same character,” Santoro told Crave Online. “It’s exciting. I think it’s going to be very interesting.”

Santoro is awaiting a final draft of the script, but he’s already confident the unique take on a franchise will work. The events of Artemesia take place while the 300 Spartans are holding off Xerxes’ forces.

“It’s not a prequel, it’s not a sequel, it’s kind of a spin-off where they show a different point of view of a different battle happening at the same time,” Santoro said. “We kind of try to explain a little bit of the original Xerxes, how he became the God king. I’m looking forward to reading it.”

The abs are sure to make us soft writer types look bad again, but Santoro is focusing more on the character, while he’s forced to pump up. “It’s just every day, five, six days a week. We do what we gotta do. We’ve got to get in shape again. It’s very physical since it’s a movie that’s very visual, but I’m actually more concerned, not concerned, I’m more excited just to get different layers for this character this time, try to give something new to the audience when I play Xerxes. Being in shape and looking look is part of it but for me it’s not the most important thing at all.”

300: Battle of Artemesia is due in theaters August 2, 2013.
