Update: Marvel and Ubisoft have announced today that Avengers: Battle for Earth is a real thing, headed to Xbox 360 and Wii U later this fall. However, the game will be based around motion controls with Microsoft's Kinect sensor and the Wii U's motion gensture controller. A standard controller version is not in the cards. Sad face.
The game is being developed by Ubisoft's Quebec studio, and will take inspiration from Marvel's relatively-recent "Secret Invasion" storyline, featuring Skrulls invading the planet. You can expect all the Avengers from the movie, as well as more to round out the roster of 20 heroes.
More on this game as it comes in.
Original Story: With how successful Marvel’s Avengers has been in theaters, it’s a damn shame we don’t have a video game tie-in to continue our love affair with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. That is, unless, you count this gem.
The lack of an Avengers tie-in game seems like a huge missed opportunity on Marvel and Disney’s part. It would have been money in the bag, no doubt about it.
But maybe the House of Ideas and the House of Mouse are trying to rectify that mistake. A domain registration has popped up on a Ubisoft server revealing “Avengers: Battle for Earth.”
As a few sites across the Internet have already pointed out, the fact that this title appears on a Ubisoft server is surprising. With Disney having purchased Marvel in 2009, we were under the impression Disney would handle all future video game adaptations of Marvel’s characters. This made sense, especially in light of Marvel cutting ties with Sega, who did all of their games, outside X-Men and Spider-Man, in recent years.
It’s also worth noting that this game could turn out to be another Facebook title, not unlike Disney’s Marvel: Avengers Alliance. We could be making much ado about nothing, folks.
But the fact remains: we want a full-on, balls-to-the-wall Avengers video game. Hopefully this will be it.
