When Jorma Taccone told Screencrush he was working on ideas for Macrguber 2 and would find time to do it around his and Will Forte’s other projects, it was a happy day. Macgruber made less than even the usual “SNL” movie, but anyone who saw it couldn’t believe the outrageous celery sticking humor.
Unfortunately, Forte himself brought Macgruber 2 talk back to reality. At a press conference for That’s My Boy, in which he plays a supporting role, Forte said Taccone was just joking.
“Jorma mentioned it, he was really tired one morning doing an interview and he said something stupid about it,” Forte said. “Believe me, we had so much fun doing that, we’re proud of it and jokingly talk about a sequel all the time, but I don't think anybody in their right mind would give us any money for it.”
We followed up after the press conference, and Forte was happy to talk about Macgruber 2, but maintained light spirits over his pessimism.
“This is almost certainly never going to happen,” Forte laughed. “I mean, never say never. But never. I think we all had the time of our lives making Macgruber, we’re super proud of it and I think we all would love to do another one. I don't know how realistic it is but we think about it all the time just because it makes us happy. We just love doing it so much.”
As for Taccone’s suggestion that Macgruber 2 would follow the Die Hard model and be set at Christmas, Forte said there’s no specific “Macgruber in a Building” plan.
“Oh, no, no, no. Obviously the first one was just a general action movie template. If we were to ever try to do another one it would probably follow more action movie templates that were sequels. I think that’s the only thing he was talking about.”
I was hoping Taccone’s news would be confirmed and I was ready to ask Forte if Universal was actually paying for the sequel. Now I just had to ask if they would have to buy the rights back to even make a sequel elsewhere. Forte didn’t know.
“Oh, I have no idea about any of that stuff. I don't know how any of that stuff works.”
CraveOnline be back with more on Macgruber 2 as soon as we hump our ex-wife’s ghost.
