This fall, The CW will launch "Arrow," a successor of sorts to "Smallville" that brings the DC superhero Green Arrow back to TV in his own live action series.
Stephen Amell will step into the title role after his alter ego, Oliver Queen returns from a desert island after being stranded for five years. Upon his return to civilization, Olivier reinvents himself as the vigilante called Arrow in order to take down criminals who would otherwise escape justice while keeping his new life a secret from his sister, Thea (Willa Holland) and his mother, Moira (Susanna Thompson); who may have engineered the shipwreck that trapped Oliver and took the life of his father.
The new extended trailer for "Arrow" confirms that Oliver won't be calling himself Green Arrow in the series and it also features an extended look at Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance — Oliver's former girlfriend who is also the superheroine Black Canary in the comics — and Colin Donnell as Tommy Merlyn, a character that is based on one of Green Arrow's main adversariess.
The biggest buzz surrounding this trailer comes from a brief moment at the 3:23 mark that apparently shows the mask of Deathstroke the Terminator discarded with an arrow through it's right eye slot on the desert island that Oliver spent half a decade on. For those of you unfamiliar with the character, Deathstroke is a superhuman mercenary who has primarily been a Teen Titans villain for most of his existence.
If Deathstroke does show up in "Arrow," it would be his third onscreen appearance after Antonio Sabato Jr.'s guest spot on "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" and Michael Hogan's recurring stint during the tenth season of "Smallville." There is even some history of animosity in the comics between Green Arrow and Deathstroke, particularly from this incident during the Identity Crisis miniseries.
However, fans shouldn't get too excited for a Deathstroke appearance just yet. The character has yet to be named on any of the previously released cast lists and the fleeting appearance of his mask in this trailer suggests that this is simply an Easter egg for sharp eyed fans.
But the mask's presence does suggest that Oliver Queen had a run in with Deathstroke on the island and that he came out on top. That would definitely be worth exploring if the producers of "Arrow" decide to bring in Deathstroke down the road as he seeks his revenge…
"Arrow" will debut this September on The CW.
