Avatar may be the biggest movie in the world, earning an astounding international box office take of over $2.7 billion, but it just got a little bigger. Sigourney Weaver is now claiming that James Cameron will shoot not one but three sequels to Avatar at the same time, and that she'll be there for all of them. Pretty impressive for a character who [SPOILER ALERT for a film everyone on the planet has already seen] died in the first film. [END SPOILERS.]
While promoting her new television series "Political Animals," Weaver apparently revealed that she'll be filming Avatar 2, 3 and 4 after appearing in a Christopher Durang play at the Lincoln Center. Weaver's exact quote was not included, but Showbiz 411 seemed to confirm her intent by clarifying, "That’s right: they’re making three sequels to the blue 3D phenom all at the same time. Weaver says she has no idea how long it will take, or how it’s going to work."
In response to that uncertainty, Sigourney Weaver said the following: "I just show up."
This isn't the first time Sigourney Weaver has spoken about the Avatar sequels without an official studio announcement. The last time she announced her involvement in Avatar 2, James Cameron was quick to clarify her comments, implying that she might only come back in a flashback of some kind.
But if true, what do three new sequels mean for the Avatar franchise? Will this make the original Avatar a sort of prequel to a larger story, like The Hobbit to the new movies' Lord of the Rings? Or are they bypassing the trilogy route altogether and just making a bunch of new movies, with no end to the franchise. James Cameron did say he's only going to make Avatar movies from now on, after all…
