Fashion gurus rejoice – the U.S. brand Kate Spade New York and UK's Ted Baker London are both set to open Canadian stores, it was recently announced.
The two standalone stores will open at the Yorkdale Shopping Centre in Toronto this fall – the Kate Spade space will be 1600 square feet and Ted Baker will occupy a 3245 square foot store. Other new companies making their way to this fashion Mecca are car makers Tesla Motors, Rolex and athletic collections from Lacoste. The additional boutiques are a part of a $220-million renovation on the mall, which will also include expanding current parking lots and integrating a new food court.
The success of earlier brands at the mall, including Michael Kors, Burburry and Crate & Barrel, have drawn other high-profile retailers to the mall, said spokesman Anthony Casalanguida to The Star. “I think it solidifies our shopping experience as being unique."
It should come as no surprise that Yorkdale Shopping Centre was the "chosen one" when it came to such exclusive brands making their way to Canadian shoppers. Sales at the mall average $1,300 per square foot, said Casalanguida, putting it in the ranks of the Eaton Centre and Vancouver’s Pacific Centre among Canada’s most profitable malls (The Star).
Other foreign brand names that have recently entered the Canadian market include Marshalls, Express, Tory Burch, Topshop, Topman, and J. Crew, and Canucks are anxiously awaiting the arrival of big-box store Target, which will start opening its doors next year.
