While taking your regular stroll through the interwebs you may want to spend some time today on the Nerdist’s Youtube channel. There you will find the premier of the brand new Youtube show, “Tournament of Nerds” and if you watch it very closely you might just catch CraveOnline.com comedy channel editor Sax Carr (that’s me). That’s not entirely true actually. You won’t have to watch closely at all as I’ll be the bombastic, heavy-set man in the amazingly unflattering Captain America costume. Some of you may have trouble un-seeing me. But I digress…
“Tournament of Nerds” is a one-on-one debate show that answers the question: “Who would win in a fight?” if that fight was between two iconic fictional (or sometimes very real) characters. It’s not dissimilar from some other “Vs.” shows on the internet including one I quite enjoy called “Superpower Beatdown,” but this show differs from those in some major ways.
First it’s based on an already existing live show that’s been blowing up stages all over Hollywood for the past four years, mostly at the celebrated Upright Citizens Brigade Theater. Four years is a lot of time to get the format right, and that’s where this show really pulls ahead of its competitors. By the way, these shows have been sold out every single month for as long as anyone can remember.
Secondly, “Tournament of Nerds” is a comedy show, and that’s the bottom line. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, and neither should you. The victory of the night goes to the person who finds a way to win the fight and make it clever, innovative, and ever-loving funny. This not only makes the show more entertaining, but allows for massively unique matches. If it was just about who could beat the other up, the Hulk wouldn’t really be much of a debate when facing, say, Abraham Lincoln, but in a fight to the funny, it’s anybody’s game. That is also the reason why it’s being covered here on the comedy channel at CraveOnline.com, because its really a comedy show, with a delightful candy coating of nerdery. Yum.
Here’s the premise as stated by the show’s creators:
“Who would win in a fight, Batman or Wolverine? Superman or Gandalf? Debates like these have raged on for decades. In dorm rooms, cubicles, classrooms, comic shops, and video stores, fans have pondered these questions that seemed unanswerable…until now.
“‘Tournament of Nerds!’ pits two comedians or “Nerds” against each other to battle it out in heated debate. Which pop culture character has the stuff to take down a fellow iconic character? Tournament of Nerds decides! Debaters pick characters to debate on behalf of, then they are timed, giving opening arguments and rebuttals. The action is fast and furious. A compelling argument can slay a more powerful foe. The goal is to advance their character through a “March Madness” type bracket in hopes of being crowned the ultimate Nerd”
The first episode, which is available Sunday, pits comedian/improviser James Ross as “Die Hard’s” John Mclain against yours truly as Captain America. The viewer votes will carry one of us forward to the next round. Other potential matchups this tourney include; The Goonies vs. Willy Wonka, and Abraham Lincoln Vs. The Kool-Aid Man plus many many more. Please check it out, and if you see fit to vote for me, it will make my embarrassing costume all the more tolerable.
Some of the celebrity debates are judges this season include; Ben Garant (Reno 911, The State) Maddox (The Alphabet of Manliness, The Best Page in the Universe), Roger Barr (I-Mockery), Chris Tallman (Reno 911, Crossballs), and celebrity judges like John Hennigan, Andy Biersack, Riki Lindhome, Matt Bennett, Brea Grant, and many more.
It’s really worth the watch. Could this be Captain America’s tournament? I hope so, but there are some pretty fierce competitors on the field. You’ll have to watch to see how far I go. Here’s a teaser of the series:
