Last season on "Boardwalk Empire," Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Steve Buscemi) shocked viewers when he brutally executed his former protegee Jimmy Darmody (Michael Pitt) for his betrayal. Nucky also beat the vote-tampering and corruption charges, but that doesn't mean that he has clear skies ahead.

When "Boardwalk Empire" returns to HBO on Sunday, September 16, the Prohibition era series will jump ahead in time and deal with the fallout from Nucky's wife Margaret (Kelly Macdonald) signing his lands over to the Catholic church. Nucky will also have to contend with Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale), a "charming but ruthless gangster" who will become Nucky's latest rival in the criminal underworld.

Steven Root will also be joining the cast of "Boardwalk Empire" as Gaston Means, a reputed "forger, swindler and murder suspect" who is also a Special Investigator for the Department of Justice under Attorney General Harry Daugherty.

Actress Paz de la Huerta will not be reprising her role as Lucy Danziger, who ran off during season two and never returned for her child. But Michael Shannon is expected to return as Nelson Van Alden, the disgraced former federal agent who is now a fugitive himself.

HBO has also announced the return date for "Treme;" which will kick off its third season on Sunday, September 23.
